Haematology department is dealing with haematological malignancies and related disorders in both outdoor and indoor setup. Besides, this department is providing haematology laboratory and day care services also.  The department is run by a full set of hematologists that includes two associate professor, two assistant professors, and skilled medical professionals, nurses and supporting  staff.

Role of the department: 
The aim of this department is to provide hematological services, both clinical and  diagnostic service  at tertiary level to the patients suffering mainly from hematological malignancy and related disorders, and to help developing human resource in hematology.

Key functions: 
a. To provide comprehensive diagnosis  and treatment facilities for hematological malignancy patients. 
b. To set up of a  data bank for cancer registry of   haematological  malignancy patients with other tertiary cancer care hospital and stakeholders  
c. To run post graduate courses and provide training facilities for physicians. 
d. Conduct research activities for gathering and sharing knowledge with others. 
Scope of work: 
1. Bone marrow transplant center  establishment is going on. We are committed to start autologous transplant as early as possible. 
 2. To provide one stop services for diagnosis and evaluation of malignancies and patients management. 3. To provide specialized training facilities, workshop, hands on training  for haematologists and  nurses . 4. Rehabilitation of cancer survivors.  
5. Create public awareness for prevention and control of cancer.

History and establishment: 
a. Haematology department  starts its activities since 2004. At that time, all the patients care had given under supervision of  oncology unit. Since 2006, the department had run by its own by Professor Md. Mahbubur Rahman. He started  outdoor patient service and developed day care service and laboratory services with a very few measures like set up of a cell counter machine and blood film examination by microscope.  Gradually indoor admission facilities started. 

b. Milestone and major achievements: 
2004: The Department of Haematology was established at NICRH in 2004 that started its synchronized activities of indoor, outdoor, day care center and laboratory works in 2006.
2012: Coagulation profile tests started on 2012.
2016: Automated cell counter (Sysmax 5 part machine ) set up on 2016.
2019: Automated Coagulation profile  tests started on 2019
2022: All tests for multiple myeloma profile has started on 2022.
2023: Flowcytometry started its journey to confirm molecular diagnosis for haematological malignancies.  

1. Outpatient Department

  • Description: Located on the 6th floor, D block. All patients require an outdoor ticket with online registration and should report to Room No. 720. Registries are completed at Room No. 720, after which a tag number is provided to attend physicians in various rooms.

  • Availability: 8:30 AM to 1:00 PM

  • Appointment Required: Yes (online registration and tag number system)

2. Laboratory Services

  • Description: Laboratory is on the 8th floor and is a restricted area. Sample collection is in Room No. 720, and bone marrow collection is in Room No. 701. Blood samples are collected at the same place, and bone marrow aspiration is performed in Room No. 701.

  • Availability: 8:30 AM to 1:00 PM

  • Appointment Required: No (samples collected directly within the specified times)

3. Day Care Service

  • Description: Registered hemato-oncology cancer patients register for day care service. After obtaining written consent from physicians, they receive chemotherapy from the day care center. Physicians provide written permission for chemotherapy.

  • Availability: 8:30 AM to 2:00 PM

  • Appointment Required: Yes (written consent from physicians is required)

4. Indoor Service

  • Description: We have 42 beds for indoor admission services (27 for male patients, 15 for female patients). Admission to cabins is decided by the administrative block of NICRH. Indoor admission is located in the hospital building.

  • Availability: 24 hours service

  • Appointment Required: Yes (assigned hematologists decide who will be admitted)

    5. Specialized Facilities & Technologies


    a. Diagnostic tools:

    1. Flow-cytometry for immunophenotyping (acute leukaemia panel)

    2. Serum protein immunoelectrophoresis

    3. Urine immunoelectrophoresis

    4. Free light chain assay

    b. Autologous bone marrow stem cell transplantation will be started within a short period of time.
